Dominican Republic survives Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma pounded northern Caribbean islands with winds of up to 185 mph, it was a Category 5 hurricane, one of the strongest in the history. The Dominican Republic National Office of Meteorology warned a hurricane alert in the area that included the destinations of Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Samaná because of the passage of Hurricane Irma on Thursday, September 7.



Hurrican Irma has been described as one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. The safety of the inhabitants and tourist has been the most important priority for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism and the authorities of the country.





Has Hurrican Irma already ended?



Hurricane Irma has been ripping through part of the Caribbean for the past few days and was passing just north of the Dominican Republic on Thursday and right now moved to Florida where it’s going to end soon.



Did Irma affect tourism in the Dominican Republic?



The Dominican Republic National Office of Meteorology and the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida have issued a hurricane alert from Cabo Engaño to Bahía due to the arrival of Hurricane Irma on Thursday, September 7.



Part of the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic have experienced widespread destruction from Irma, for example, a bridge connecting the Dominican Republic and Haiti was washed away; in the northern part of Samana, Las Terrenas and Nagua many areas were flooded during the storm. Few buildings were destroyed in the northern part of the Dominican Republic: strong high waves in Nagua, few restaurants and “chiringuitos” have been damaged in Las Terrenas and high winds hit the coast.



In the Dominican Republic, we didn’t suffer huge damage like in the other Caribbean Island of Barbuda, Antigua, St. Martin, and Cuba. In the Dominican Republic, the tourism hasn’t been affected in a negative way and the touristic destinations are receiving tourist again as usual.



Is going to take a long time to fix the damages in the Dominican Republic?



No, it’s not going to take a long time for things to get back to normal in the northern part of the Dominican Republic because people and authorities are working hard and quickly to fix the damages and even since now the tourism activities are running as usual.



Are the touristic destinations in the Dominican Republic operate normally?



The Dominican Ministry of Tourism reports that: “the country’s tourist destinations were not negatively affected by Hurricane Irma and are up-and-running as usual. All airports, seaports, highways, tourist attractions and hotels of the major destinations such as Punta Cana/ Bavaro, Samana’, Sosua, Cabarete, Puerto Plata, La Romana, Bayahibe, Juan Dolio are operating normally. “
