Are you the kind of explorer that want to know more and more about a country? The Dominican Republic has many faces, from beaches to mountains, from historical centers to typical Dominican villages. With Mediterranean climates and savannas in the South through humid rainforests at the Nord until low temperatures in the central part of the country.
10 days wouldn’t be enough either would be a month but here comes an ultimate 10 days itinerary for those who are interested in a beach vacation mixed with some history and culture in the oldest permanent European settlement in the Americas.
If you choose to do this itinerary, we recommend flying into Santo Domingo, Punta Cana or El Catey, depending on where are you flying from and on the deal you can find. Combining the itinerary on the condition of your flight, we recommend starting your journey staying maximum 2 nights in the capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo.
Explore the Zona Colonial. Scroll between little streets full of colorful houses in Spanish Colonial style. Visit the museums that will let you discover the history of the colonization. Take a look at Columbus house and to the First Cathedral of the Americas. Take a walk through the cobblestone street of Calle Las Damas end go to some souvenir shopping in Calle El Conde. Don’t forget to try the Dominican cuisine and to have some very good tapas accompanied by some good wine in Plaza Espana. After dinner go to discover the nightlife of the Colonial Zone, learn to dance some bachata and merengue. Let yourself guide by local people that are the best dancers ever. If you are looking for some more sparkly nightlife take a cab to the city center, Piantini, and Naco and discover very good high-quality restaurants and bars than head to some club and dance till the sun rises.
If you follow our itinerary your next step will be the North of the Dominican Republic. Head to Samana Peninsula, exactly to Las Terrenas and surroundings. You can get to Las Terrenas by public transportation but the timetable is limited. Otherwise, you can take a cab that will take you there in about 2 hours. If you stay in Las Terrenas around 4/5 nights the ideal thing is to rent a nice beachfront apartment where you can walk to the beach as well as to the restaurants and supermarkets.
During your stay in Las Terrenas, you can’t miss the awesome excursion to the El Limon Waterfall which you will reach by horseback riding. If you travel during whale watching season don’t miss this incredible experience, to get in touch with this magnificent animals. After that, go and enjoy the silence and the beauty of the Mangroves of the Los Haitises National Park. At the and of all these exciting activities you can relax on the gorgeous beach of Cayo Levantado.
While you are in Las Terrenas, you must visit it’s wonderful, wild and still untouched beaches such as Playa Bonita, Playa Las Ballenas and Playa Coson where you can have a very typical Dominican lunch with fresh seafood and a tasteful pina colada. Definitely, a must do during your stay in Las Terrenas.
In Las Terrenas, you do not need to rent a car because everything is at walking distance and there is plenty of local “motoconcho” that will take you anywhere for 100 Dominican pesos (2$). For the excursions, the prices will include transportation.
After you experience the real face of the Dominican Republic, and you had great adventures, tried good seafood dishes, climbed mountains and waterfalls, even if you won’t want to leave this please it will be time to go and get some relaxed beach time in Punta Cana. In Punta Cana, you will have 2 options to chose from for what regards the accommodation.
All inclusive formula or very nice and cozy private beach apartments. Normally we recommend the second option but If you are more likely to go on all inclusive formula we propose some of this kind of hotels that are not the standard huge and crowded resort but very exclusive, boutique resort with all-inclusive formula at a great price.
Whether you stay in hotel or apartment you must visit some beautiful beach such as Playa Blanca; with its incredibly white sands and turquoise waters. Juanillo Beach, where you will find a very nice beachfront restaurant. Prices here are affordable and the food is very delicious. Oh, and of course, a MUST try is their Mojito Chinola…sooo good!
If the wild beaches of Las Terrenas weren’t enough for you, you should take a jump to Macao beach. A different kind of beach from the other beaches of Punta Cana and Bavaro. Here you will find little kiosk on the beach where they cook fresh seafood and it is also a good spot for surf lovers.
As for the nightlife, you can’t miss the Coco Bongo show, that is an incredible nightlife experience. And for those who after that wants more boogie we recommend Imagine that is a club in a cave. There is 2 kind of rooms in Imagine, electronic music and Latin music so everybody can find his way to dance and enjoy the night.
About the dining, in Punta Cana and Bavaro area, there are plenty of places to chose from. If you prefer something easy but cheesy we recommend the little restaurants in Bavaro. If you like fine dining and nice, elegant atmosphere you really should have the experience of Bachata Rosa. A new restaurant with very nice and fancy decoration. The menu is just exquisite and offers a range of gourmet dishes. From fine cuts to fresh fish you will have the liberty of choosing whatever your palate would like to taste. And the best part is yet to come. If you visit this restaurant during the weekend you will be part of a very funny show of live music with animators and dancers. Really worth a dinner.
About the transportation in Punta Cana, if you want to explore and go around it is unavoidable to rent a car because distances are very huge and taxis are expensive.
